17o. Enccontro Internacional de Música e Mídia/ 17th. Music and Media Meeting

LA VIE EN ROSE? MÚSICA E MÍDIA EM TEMPOS TÓXICOS.

15 a 17 de setembro, 2021

(ENGLISH FOLLOWS)

Encontro Internacional.

LA VIE EN ROSE? MUSIC AND MEDIA IN TOXIC TIMES.

17th. Music and Media  Meeting

 September 15th-17th, 2021

In 1905, Canhoto composed a work that would become an obligatory piece in the Brazilian guitar repertoire: Abismo de rosas. In 1968, the singer-songwriter Geraldo Vandré would appeal to flowers to call on the population to react and resist the repression imposed by the military period. Again the flowers: this time carnations would be used, in Portugal, to change the history: the Carnation Revolution (1974). In 1978, in the midst of the military dictatorship, Secos e Molhados insistently asked: "What happened to all the flowers? At the same time, the "King" Roberto Carlos composed The flowers of our home’s garden; intimate and melancholic, contrasting with the "astral flowers" of Secos e Molhados. Simultaneously, "overwhelmed" and conservative verve garnered a growing audience, always appealing to flowers... More recently, in 2013, the group Confronto released the heavy metal song Flowers of War, alluding to African descendant warrior heroines.

The ideologies make use of flowers to launch their agendas (red rose, milk cup).   Red tulip is an analgesic, anesthetic, hypnotic, sedative and serves to stimulate creativity, also serves to numb, to dull the senses - when all that is left is escape or conformism, in the face of a morbid reality.

And through symbols we can talk about passions. They are almost always associated with love songs, moreover in Latin-American culture. But we also talk about the soft petals, the shape, the colors and the perfume. Why would the beautiful flowers be related to unhealthy events and experiences? Why do loves and hates come together with flowers? How many marigolds will history have recorded and still waits to note? \ Still, beyond any binary images, aren't flowers also ambiguous and polyvalent imaginary constructs, lending themselves to uses that challenge the categories of conformism and resistance, good and evil, purity and contamination? Don't the flowers also impose their charm by sprouting from and on the asphalt?

We resort to flowers, at the same time poison and remedy, to motivate the discussions that will guide the 17th International Music and Media Meeting. The world has been the stage for events that point to a regression in relation to conquests obtained not infrequently through the centuries, which flag carried a flower as a symbol: democracy, represented by gender and ethnic equality, respect and tolerance in relation to religious manifestations and cultural diversity; the right to education, to vote, to ideological plurality. What the world is witnessing today is the deterioration of ecosystems; the resurgence of diseases that were thought to be extinct. People are exterminated for banal reasons; false myths are embraced as holy messengers of truth. As if this were not enough, a virus takes the planet by storm, causing disgrace and perplexity.

How could the 21st century, which, with the conquests obtained thanks to the development of sciences, have taken this course towards an abyss.... that would not be lined with roses? Among the several possible justifications, we believe that, to a great extent, these phenomena are due to a dismantling of schooling - which implies in teacher training, working conditions, infrastructure and, above all, in the guidelines that organize the educational directives. In addition, the extinction of subjects in the arts area contributes a lot to this lack of capacity for reflection. In addition, among the arts, music, so present in our daily lives, has its share of participation elevated: beyond entertainment, it is part of the basic educational formation. It is necessary to revaluate this scenario so that we can reflect on measures that will offer brighter future perspectives...
